The “key points of study” and “principles of practice” that swimming self learners should know

Yesterday, I watched the exchange and discussion of swimming learning ways in the swimming training group: coach or self-study.
Hire a good coach to teach you swimming, of course, is the best choice, but a good coach to see fate, fate to the possibility of economic ability and let you hesitate.
A swimmer said something that impressed me deeply: smart people can learn to swim by themselves.
Even as a swimming coach who teaches swimming to eat, I agree with this sentence, but how to become a smart person is the most difficult point.
If you have a high IQ, you can not become a smart person who can study by yourself successfully. Paying attention to ways and methods is the wisdom of learning swimming.
Swimming career for 7 years, swimming teaching for 11 years, I summed up a set of teaching syllabus to help me better teach swimming, today to share with you who love swimming: uphold the four principles in the learning process, pay attention to the six parts of each swimming posture, everyone can become a self-taught smart person.
The article is a little long, but it is worth reading. I believe all swimmers will have a new understanding of learning swimming.

“Six key points” for self taught swimming

In swimming teaching, although the four swimming postures have different technical movements, they always have common teaching points and concerns. Today, we will not talk about the details of the movements, but summarize the six things you need to pay attention to in the four swimming postures, and strive to do well.

Stretch your body and stretch your shoulders forward

No matter what position you swim, your body should be elongated and stretched. Shoulder forward is not only in freestyle.
On the one hand, it can help the palm to start the stroke further, increase the stroke route, and increase the effectiveness of each stroke; On the other hand, it makes the body longer and narrower, forming a streamline in the water with less resistance.

Don’t underestimate it. If you can do this part well in every swimming position, your swimming speed can be increased by 10%.

Head position with and without ventilation

The head position when swimming is equivalent to your Poseidon needle.
Incorrect head position can affect your overall movement: leg sinking, body twisting, difficult arm movement, etc.
The position of the head should be stable and straight when not breathing, and the head position should be in the correct range when breathing.

No matter how good your rowers and kicks are, if you have head position problems, your efficiency will be reduced by 15% or more.

High elbow stroke

I don’t think I need to repeat the importance of this matter!
The underwater stroke part is the source of maximum propulsion in swimming (except breaststroke). In short, it determines most of your effectiveness and speed.
The four swimming postures all need high elbow stroke. It’s not necessary to say whether you can walk in the water depends on whether you are high elbow or sliding elbow; The breaststroke paddler although the propulsion is not strong, but the high elbow determines your breathing position and after the arm forward extension can do better.

No matter how much energy it takes to do a good job of high elbow stroke, it’s worth it!

A light “brainless” kick

Many people say it’s hard to kick: it’s hard to kick breaststroke for beginners, it’s tired to kick freestyle, it’s hard to feel backstroke kick, it’s like a “bug” to kick butterfly stroke.
In fact, the most difficult part of four swimming postures is kicking, they just need you to spend more time and energy to practice.
“Brainless” kicking is not to say that you don’t use your brain in your study, but to practice to the extent that you can kick correctly without thinking and subconsciousness.

In the process of learning and practicing, we still need to pay attention to the correct and effective methods. After finding the feeling, we should constantly repeat and consolidate, and finally turn kicking into a kind of mechanical unconscious action.
The importance of kicking has been emphasized many times in previous articles: propulsion, body lift and balance, hand leg joint force.
Any swimming leg movement can not be ignored, learning practice, difficult is really not difficult, tired is really a little tired, but worth it!
