When adults learn to swim, should they first learn “spirit” or “form”?

–Give full play to their own advantages and learn faster than children!

We often hear swimmers say that adults are not as fast as children in learning to swim. Children are younger, and their flexibility and physical condition are better than adults.
I agree with you in the second half of the sentence. It’s true that children have more advantages in terms of physical conditions, but do physical conditions determine their ability to learn faster and stronger?

I don’t think so!
Adults can not use their own disadvantages to compare the advantages of children, to find, use the advantages of adults to faster unlock swimming skills.

“Form” and “spirit” in swimming

Yesterday, after discussing freestyle technique, a swimmer in the group said, “at my level, I have to learn form first, and then pursue God.”
I think it also represents the choice of most adult swimmers.
In swimming, “form” represents body movements, “spirit” represents understanding and feeling of movements.
If ask you: swimming should first pursue shape? Or do you want to pursue the likeness first? Will your answer be the same as his?

Which should we learn first, form or spirit?
Some people will say: it’s better to combine the spirit with the form.
As an amateur swimmer, the body that comes to mind can be done right away. Can anyone do it with such difficulty?
It is very important to learn a skill, understanding ability and problem-solving ideas, which are just the advantages of adults.

In the second half of last year, I made a teaching comparison, using two different teaching methods, offline teaching 5 children aged 8-10, online teaching 20 adults over 30.

1.The children’s understanding ability is poor, and the principle and knowledge of swimming movement they can receive are also low, so they talk too much about “why do you swim like this” and “the feeling that this movement should find”, and they can’t understand it, which is basically in vain.

The best way to learn swimming is to imitate the correct movements and repeat the exercises, that is, to learn the form first.
With the gradual improvement of understanding ability, and then to experience the feeling from the action, understand the principle of action, swimming level can be further improved, this is the God of learning.
2. adults learn to swim differently. They have a strong understanding ability and a higher degree of acquisition of principles, knowledge and feelings. However, the ability of imitation is restricted by physical conditions and muscle power habits, which is certainly not as good as a child with a piece of white paper.
If you are just like a child, you simply repeat and imitate the correct movements, and give up your own advantages, and you are limited by your body, your movements will “deviate”.
When adults learn to swim, they should “know what it is, know why it is”, and give full play to their advantages: they not only know what is right, but also know why they do it, and what strength and feeling they should have when they do it.

Understanding ability and stronger thinking ability are the advantages of adults. To find feelings instead of just doing actions can help you find the best actions that are more suitable for your physical conditions.
Instead of seemingly correct, but not suitable for themselves, do not swim fast farfetched action.
There are also subtle differences in the swimming movements of professional athletes, which will be adjusted according to their own physical conditions and water feeling. The good swimming movements of others may not be suitable for them.

To understand the principle of action, to know the power and feeling of action is to learn the spirit first, and to make the right action by understanding the action and finding the right power and feeling. This is the form of learning later.

Through half a year of teaching freestyle with different teaching methods, the children who first form and then spirit compare with the adults who first form and then spirit. The progress and results show that adults are far better than children, learning faster and the results are better.

Why do children seem to learn faster?

Some people may question: how do I think children learn faster? Look at the children in the long training team. How well they swim.
It’s very simple. Take a close look at the children in the long-term training team. Many of them have practiced for more than a year without considering the speed. They just look at the movements: straight arm swing, underwater elbow sliding, breathing and lifting head, and physical instability everywhere.

Their swimming speed is improved by the length and amount of training. If an adult also uses the same time and energy to understand the principle and find the feeling in learning, the final result will be better.
It’s a pity that adults can’t train about 3500m per day.

Make full use of advantages and avoid disadvantages

Adults have their own advantages. Don’t let go of their own advantages to cling to their own disadvantages. If adults learn to swim like children, they can’t think by imitating all the time, it’s too hard.
A lot of people try to imitate the correct movements every day when they go into the water. After a few months, they still don’t swim well and are frustrated.
If we change the way of thinking, think more about why we should do this, what is the principle, what kind of feeling we should find, when and where we should work, we can quickly solve the problem.
Today’s article is to share the teaching conclusion with swimmers. I hope that when you read and watch the video of swimming related articles on the Internet, you will not only look at the action itself, but also seek the principle and feeling of the action, so as to “know what it is, know why it is”, give full play to the advantages of understanding and thinking belonging to adults, and learn and master swimming skills faster.

In swimming, ask more “why” and take a shortcut with your brain instead of trying to imitate.
